auroOrk.jpg

Image taken on the night of 28th September 2007 at the Steness stone circle on the Orkney Mainland. Taken by Grant Privett using a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 (not a DSLR) using a tripod and 30s exposures. The moon was large gibbous and rose over the stones in a very dark sky. About halfway through the third moon-on-stones picture sky to the north displayed an aurora. First as a hint of greenish hue on the horizon. Then as a vague very low arc which hardened and brightened before developing bright nodes from which rays 10-40 degrees long flicked upward toward the zenith. The display did not last long and began to fade quickly. the whole thing lasting little more than 50 minutes.
